PRESS RELEASE – MERCY MALAYSIA RESPONDS TO 6.9 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE IN PHILIPPINES

Kuala Lumpur, 2 October – MERCY Malaysia has deployed an emergency response team to the central Philippines following the powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck on 30 September 2025. The tremor caused widespread destruction across Cebu and neighbouring provinces, collapsing buildings, displacing over 18,000 people, and leaving communities without electricity, clean water, or access to essential medical care.

The Philippines, one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world, regularly experiences typhoons, floods, and earthquakes that erode community resilience and overwhelm local capacities. This latest disaster adds to growing humanitarian needs, with local authorities struggling to respond amid limited resources and ongoing aftershocks.

In response, MERCY Malaysia has activated its Rapid Assessment Team to coordinate with local partners and deliver urgent medical aid, safe shelter, clean water, and essential supplies to affected communities. The deployment underscores MERCY Malaysia’s ongoing solidarity with the people of the Philippines, with whom the organisation has worked closely during previous emergencies.

Dato’ Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus, President of MERCY Malaysia, said: “The Philippines is facing yet another devastating disaster. Our mission is to deliver urgent medical and humanitarian assistance, while also supporting resilience so that communities can recover and rebuild.”

This deployment continues MERCY Malaysia’s long-standing humanitarian engagement in the Philippines, including its response to Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 and other major disasters in the years since. The organisation remains committed to providing needs-based, impartial assistance in close coordination with local authorities and humanitarian partners.

MERCY Malaysia is calling on the public, private sector, and international community to support the ongoing relief efforts. Donations will directly fund emergency healthcare, shelter, food, clean water, sanitation, and psychosocial support for families affected by the earthquake.
