PRESS RELEASE – MERCY MALAYSIA EXPANDS HEALTHCARE SUPPORT IN SYRIA

Kuala Lumpur, 19 February 2025 – MERCY Malaysia is expanding its healthcare initiatives in Syria to address the prolonged medical crisis caused by years of conflict. The widespread destruction of medical infrastructure, shortages of essential supplies, and a diminished healthcare workforce have left millions without access to critical care. In response, MERCY Malaysia is intensifying efforts to restore healthcare services, rehabilitate medical facilities, and enhance hospital capacity in conflict-affected areas.

Since 2008, MERCY Malaysia has been actively providing humanitarian assistance in Syria, ensuring that vulnerable communities receive essential medical care. Its efforts have included establishing and supporting healthcare facilities, deploying emergency and primary healthcare teams, supplying critical medicines and medical equipment, and implementing mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) programs to aid communities recovering from trauma. Additionally, capacity-building initiatives have been introduced to train local healthcare professionals and strengthen the resilience of Syria’s healthcare system.

As part of its ongoing commitment to improving healthcare access, MERCY Malaysia has launched several key initiatives during its recent mission to Syria. To support patients requiring dialysis treatment, MERCY Malaysia has donated 10 dialysis machines to Hama National Hospital, ensuring continued care for individuals with kidney disease. Meanwhile, in Aleppo, the construction of a 630m² Emergency Department at Al-Razy Hospital is underway, adding 26 beds to enhance the hospital’s ability to manage critical cases and provide timely medical intervention. This construction project is funded by Wisma Putra as part of Malaysia’s commitment to supporting healthcare recovery in Syria.

During the visit, MERCY Malaysia’s Executive Director, Ahmad Faezal Mohamed, engaged in high-level discussions with key health officials to explore strategies for strengthening healthcare delivery and ensuring long-term sustainability. These discussions emphasized the need for sustained international support in rebuilding medical infrastructure and improving access to essential healthcare services for affected communities.

MERCY Malaysia’s President, Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus, reaffirmed MERCY Malaysia’s long-term commitment to Syria, stating, “Humanitarian aid extends beyond immediate relief. Our focus is on rebuilding essential infrastructure, strengthening medical services, and ensuring sustainable support for communities in need. This is a collective effort, and through continued collaboration, we can create lasting impact.”

As Syria’s healthcare system continues to struggle, MERCY Malaysia remains committed to addressing healthcare gaps and implementing sustainable solutions. MERCY Malaysia will continue to work alongside health authorities and humanitarian partners to support long-term healthcare recovery and ensure access to essential medical services for those who need them most.
