Kuala Lumpur, 8 November 2025 – MERCY Malaysia is deploying emergency response teams to the Philippines and Vietnam following the landfall of Typhoon Kalmaegi, one of the most powerful storms of the year. The cyclone brought sustained winds of up to 130 kilometres per hour near its centre and gusts reaching 180 kilometres per hour, leaving communities in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
In the Philippines, Typhoon Kalmaegi caused extensive flooding, infrastructure damage, and loss of life across multiple communities. Drawing on MERCY Malaysia’s long-standing humanitarian engagement in the Philippines, including responses to Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 and other major disasters since, MERCY Malaysia remains committed to providing needs-based, impartial assistance. Typhoon Fung-Wong is also expected to arrive in the Philippines tomorrow, 8 November 2025, further compounding ongoing emergency response needs.
In Vietnam, the typhoon has brought heavy rains, flooding, and landslides that have disrupted livelihoods and restricted access to essential services. This marks MERCY Malaysia’s first humanitarian operation in the country. The organisation will work closely with local partners to deliver urgent medical care, clean water, shelter, and psychosocial support, ensuring a coordinated and needs-based response.
Dato’ Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus, President of MERCY Malaysia, said:
“The communities affected by Typhoon Kalmaegi have shown extraordinary resilience in the face of immense challenges. MERCY Malaysia stands in full solidarity with the people of the Philippines, Vietnam, and the wider ASEAN region. In close coordination with the Asian Disaster Relief and Response Network (ADDRN) and local partners, we will deliver rapid, effective, and needs-based humanitarian assistance. Our teams are prepared to provide emergency medical care, clean water, and psychosocial support to the most vulnerable. In times of crisis, regional solidarity and prompt action are essential to save lives and support recovery.”
MERCY Malaysia has activated its Rapid Assessment Teams to evaluate needs on the ground and coordinate assistance with local authorities and partners. This deployment underscores the organisation’s ongoing commitment to impartial, needs-based humanitarian support and highlights its dedication to strengthening resilience across ASEAN communities.
MERCY Malaysia calls upon the public, private sector, and international community to support ongoing relief operations. Donations will directly fund emergency healthcare, shelter, food, clean water, sanitation, and psychosocial support for families affected by the typhoon.
