Kuala Lumpur, 24 November – MERCY Malaysia has activated its flood response as prolonged monsoon rains continue to affect multiple states, with conditions expected to worsen in the coming days. Rising water levels and damaged infrastructure have restricted access to many areas, putting displaced communities at heightened risk, particularly children, older persons, persons with disabilities, and individuals with chronic illnesses.
In coordination with state authorities, MERCY Malaysia is closely monitoring updates from MET Malaysia and NADMA while working directly with the Pusat Kawalan Operasi Bencana (PKOB) and Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat (JKM) to conduct rapid assessments and field interventions. This approach ensures that critical needs are met without duplication and that all activities remain guided by humanitarian principles and the organisation’s mandate to address gaps in national disaster response mechanisms.
Healthcare and public health needs are being evaluated at evacuation centres and in hard-to-reach areas, including mobile health services, Psychological First Aid, and Child Friendly Activities, with special focus on vulnerable populations. Water, sanitation, and hygiene conditions are also being assessed, alongside non-food item needs and food security arrangements, to determine where additional support is required.
Special attention is given to vulnerable groups, including individuals with chronic illnesses, persons with disabilities, and elderly people with mobility challenges. MERCY Malaysia is providing women friendly spaces and psychosocial support activities to protect the safety, dignity, and mental wellbeing of affected women.
As a certified World Health Organization Emergency Medical Team Type 1 Fixed, MERCY Malaysia operates in line with international humanitarian standards, ensuring assistance is timely, impartial, and responsive to community needs.
Dato Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus, President of MERCY Malaysia, said, “The humanitarian needs of affected communities are growing rapidly as the monsoon continues. MERCY Malaysia is committed to supporting coordinated response efforts with state authorities and partners, addressing critical gaps in healthcare, protection, and essential services. Our priority is to safeguard the most vulnerable, uphold the dignity of all those affected, and deliver principled assistance where it is needed most.”
MERCY Malaysia continues to work closely with government agencies, humanitarian partners, and civil society organisations to support flood-affected communities while contributing to national and global efforts towards sustainable development and disaster resilience.
