A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake has hit central Myanmar, causing widespread destruction. Tremors were felt in neighboring countries, with significant damage reported in Bangkok, Thailand.

Myanmar, already facing conflict, severe haze, and extreme heat, is now grappling with yet another crisis. MERCY Malaysia, through our Myanmar regional office, is closely monitoring the situation to assess the needs on the ground.

MERCY Malaysia Flood Response – Sarawak

The recent intense flooding in Kampung Gelam, Song, Sarawak, has had a profound impact on the community. Agricultural fields were completely ruined, houses suffered significant structural damage, and thick mud coated the walls and floors of residences, underscoring the scale of the calamity.

In response, MERCY Malaysia`s Sarawak Chapter swiftly delivered immediate assistance at PPS Balai Song that sheltered 198 individuals and is now focusing on post-disaster recovery needs. We are committed to providing both short-term relief and long-term support for recovery, collaborating closely with local authorities and humanitarian partners. We call for collective efforts to aid those affected. Every contribution, regardless of size, can bring comfort, hope, and relief to these communities.

MERCY Malaysia Flood Response: Johor

In the aftermath of the floods in Johor, residents continue to face hardships, with many still requiring aid to address medical needs and emotional support to cope with the disaster. MERCY Malaysia continues our flood response in this state by setting up a mobile clinic at PPS which Dewan Raya Parit Hassan, bringing much-needed assistance directly to those affected.

In addition to the mobile clinic, MERCY Malaysia conducted Child-Friendly Activities (CFA) to offer emotional relief to affected children. For those temporarily housed at the PPS, colouring books were given out to those who participated. These initiatives aim not only to provide immediate relief but also to create a supportive and healing environment for those affected.

Collective action is needed more than ever in such times. Community members, volunteers, and local authorities must work together to restore the living conditions of affected communities, particularly as Eid ul-Fitr approaches in the coming days.

MERCY Malaysia remains committed to supporting recovery efforts, ensuring that no one is left behind in the journey to rebuild.
