MERCY Malaysia began systematically focusing on Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) in its humanitarian relief operations in 2005.

Since then, a range of safe water provision strategies were employed in operations in Johor and Pahang (2006 and 2007 floods, respectively), Pakistan (2005 South Asia earthquake), Indonesia (2006 Jogjakarta earthquake), Bangladesh (2007 cyclone), Myanmar (2008 Cyclone Nargis) and in ongoing conflicts in Sudan, Palestine and Sri Lanka.

During the 2007 Pahang floods, MERCY Malaysia distributed Pur sachets sufficient to treat 1.7 million litres of water to an estimated 8,200 flood-affected people in Mengkarak, Kuala Bera, Port Iskandar, Chenor, Pesagi, and Serengkam.

Currently, MERCY Malaysia is working on an Arsenic Mitigation Project in the village of Kabarikhola, Bangladesh, which aims to provide publicly-accessible safe- and arsenic-free water. The project features a man-made well locally referred to as Indara, which is a community-based safe-water option. This involves renovation of the well & supplying arsenic-free water to household areas through an extensive pipeline network. This project is a collaboration between MERCY Malaysia and the Dhaka Community Hospital.

MERCY Malaysia received the HAP (Humanitarian Accountability Partnership) certification in 2007 and subsequently revamped or introduced methods and processes in order to be truly accountable to donors, partners and beneficiaries.
