MERCY Malaysia Conducts Child-Led DRR Workshop In Sichuan, China
Friday, 04 September 2009 - A team from MERCY Malaysia visited the township of Tashui in Sichuan, China to participate in the second phase of the Child-Led Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Project. The school-based programme is intended to serve the region which is still recovering from the May 2008 earthquake.
This collaborative effort between MERCY Malaysia and Save the Children UK (SCUK) will be implemented in 3 townships in the Sichuan province. SCUK is the implementing partner of this project, while the funding and guidance is supported by MERCY Malaysia.
The workshop aims to train students to grasp key DRR concepts and enable them to create awareness among their friends as peer-educators.
The first peer-educators workshop was conducted over 4 days in Tashui, located approximately 2 hours from Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan. The workshop was attended by 28 students, aged 13-14 from the local Middle School.
Students were exposed to DRR concepts through hands-on group work activities, and they were also taught how to plan and conduct a Risk & Resource Mapping exercise.
A knowledge-sharing session was also conducted between MERCY Malaysia and SCUK DRR team to finalise the plans for future peer-educators workshop.
For future phases of the project, these students will conduct DRR activities at their respective schools and at SCUK child activity centres.
The workshop completes the second phase of the Child-Led DRR Project, which involves training and capacity development for community members, particularly children. This follows the first phase of the project, where training and capacity development is focused on the staff of the implementing agencies.
The Tsunami Resource Centre (TRC) located in Aceh, Indonesia was built within the Syiah Kuala University (UNSYIAH) by MERCY Malaysia with partial funding support from the Force of Nature Aid Foundation.
